About GLH

the word glh is written in blue on a white background

GLH is one of the more established delivery companies in London, having been around since 1967. Its niches are ride-hailing services and package deliveries. The company also has a large team of drivers, couriers, and dispatch operatives working for the general London public and business clients. From logistics operations to passenger rides, the company offers it all.

Currently, GLH has a fleet of more than 300 eco-friendly vehicles thanks to the company’s push for sustainability. Those who’d like to work under the company can leverage the fleet or bring their own approved vehicle.

Types of GLH Drivers

There are two types of drivers employed by GLH.

1. Passenger Driver

The first is the passenger driver, who picks up passengers and brings them to their destination. To become a private hire driver, you will need to get a public carriage office (PCO) licence and drive a licenced private hire vehicle (PHV).

2. GLH Courier

The second option is to become a GLH courier, which we’ll discuss in more detail. Couriers help transport goods across London and nearby areas, including food, documents, and even alcohol.

GLH couriers have fewer requirements than passenger drivers, but you’ll still need to submit various documents and pass a background check.

One great thing about becoming a GLH courier is that you have a wide range of vehicles to choose from. These include the following.

  • Pushbikes
  • Motorbikes
  • Cargo bikes
  • Scooters
  • Vans

Whether you plan to become a GLH courier or a passenger driver, you will work as an independent contractor. That means you’ll be in charge of your own time and schedule as well as your taxes and insurance, among other operational requirements.

Requirements to Become a GLH Courier

Before starting the application process, you must first satisfy the following initial requirements to ensure a smooth and quick application.

  • Must be aged 21 and above: You must be at least 21 to be able to work as a courier. If you’re driving a van, you must be at least 25 years old.
  • DVLA Licence: All couriers must carry a licence issued by the DVLA.
  • Vehicle: While you can use your own vehicle, GLH does have a fleet where qualified couriers can borrow a means of transport.
  • DBS Check: A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check serves as your background check.

Once you’ve satisfied the initial requirements, it’s time to begin the application process.

  1. Visit the GLH Courier page and click the “Apply Now” button. You’ll also see that you can contact GLH between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM from Mondays to Fridays as an alternative to the online application process.
  2. If you’re choosing to apply online, enter the required details on the form, such as your name and the type of vehicle you want to use.
  3. Click submit, and the GLH team will get back to you.
  4. Submit the required documents, such as your driver’s licence and DBS check.
  5. Once your documents are approved, you can begin with onboarding and finally start driving.

Benefits of Working as a GLH Courier

Aside from the flexible hours, GLH couriers enjoy many benefits even though they’re not official employees. Here’s what to expect when you join the GLH ranks.

Fleet of Green Vehicles

GLH carries a wide range of sustainable transportation modes, ranging from bikes to vans. The company also accepts privately owned units.

High Delivery Rates

The company has claimed that drivers can earn up to £1,500 per week. Of course, this amount is for those who work for eight hours or more. If you’re only working part-time, expect to earn less than this amount.

24/7 Office Support

If you encounter issues in the middle of the night, you can access the 24/7 helpline for drivers. That way, you can resolve issues immediately and return to your work.

Paid Congestion Charge

If your route brings you to the Congestion Charge zone, GLH will pay the additional fee.

Additional Training

GHL offers external training opportunities for all drivers, whether you’re a passenger driver or a courier. You can learn about an array of topics, such as emergency first aid at work.

Earning Potential as a GLH Courier

a person is putting a coin into a blue piggy bank

One of the most compelling reasons to become a GLH Courier is the attractive earning potential, combined with the flexibility to control your schedule. GLH offers competitive rates to its couriers, ensuring that hard work and dedication are rewarded. Here’s what you need to know about the financial aspects of working as a GLH Courier:

Competitive Compensation

GLH Couriers can expect to earn based on the number of deliveries they complete, with the company offering high delivery rates to ensure that couriers are compensated fairly for their efforts. The pay structure is designed to motivate couriers to maximise their earnings by efficiently managing their delivery routes and time.

Weekly Earnings

The actual amount a courier can expect to earn varies depending on several factors, including the type of vehicle used, the number of hours worked, and the distance covered. On average, GLH claims that dedicated drivers can earn up to £1,500 per week. This figure represents couriers who work full-time hours (or more) and manage their schedules to optimise delivery times and routes.

Flexibility and Part-time Earnings

For those looking to work as a GLH Courier on a part-time basis, the flexibility of the role allows for significant control over earning potential. Part-time couriers can tailor their working hours to fit around other commitments, making it an ideal side hustle. While part-time earnings will be less than the maximum potential, they still provide a lucrative opportunity to supplement income.

Tax considerations

the word tax is written in wooden blocks on a wooden table

As a self-employed GLH Driver, the company won’t handle your taxes, so you’ll have to deal with your own tax affairs. Thankfully, you don’t have to register with HMRC until your income exceeds the £1,000 annual trading allowance. After that, you will need to register for self-assessment and start paying your dues. Make sure to keep records of your earnings and expenses to ensure accurate payments.

FAQs

  • Does GLH cover the whole of the UK?

GLH predominantly operates within London, providing a comprehensive range of courier and ride-hailing services across the capital. While their core operations are focused in London, they also offer services that extend to surrounding areas, catering to a broad spectrum of logistics and delivery needs. However, if you're outside London, it's worth checking directly with GLH or on their official website for the most current information on their service areas, as the company may expand its operations or offer specific services in other parts of the UK.

  • Can I be self-employed with GLH?

Yes, you can be self-employed with GLH. As a GLH courier, you would operate as an independent contractor, which means you're essentially running your own business. This setup allows you the flexibility to set your working hours and control your schedule, making it an ideal choice for those looking for a side hustle or a flexible work arrangement. Being self-employed with GLH also means you're responsible for managing your taxes, insurance, and any operational costs related to your vehicle. It's a great opportunity to work independently while being connected to a reputable and supportive network.

  • How much does a GLH courier earn?

The earnings of a GLH courier can vary significantly based on several factors, including the number of hours worked, the type of deliveries, and the efficiency of route management. On average, GLH suggests that diligent couriers can earn upwards of £1,500 per week, particularly when working full-time hours. Part-time couriers can expect to earn less, proportionate to the hours and effort they put in. It's important to note that these figures can fluctuate based on demand, the specific area you're working in, and how well you manage your delivery schedules. As with any self-employed role, the more you invest in terms of time and effort, the higher your potential earnings.
